After losing their opening match of 2019 by 24-12 away to Sheffield.

The powerful home side monopolised the foursomes at Waterfront Golf Club, taking a 10-2 lead, and resisted a top-order fight back to win the singles 14-10.

Huddersfield GC’s Dominic Hughes and Willow Valley’s Habib Khan were the visitors’ only winners in the morning, by the narrowest of margins.

Halifax-Huddersfield’s Harry Mowl (Huddersfield), Matthew Holden (Lightcliffe) and Ben Walker (Huddersfield) won the top three singles matches but Meltham’s James Bailey was the only visiting player to add a further two points in the remaining nine contests.

HHDUGC Juniors look to bounce back after their defeat to Sheffield in first match of season

East Riding always provide stern competition and have aspirations of doing well. They are managed by the Yorkshire Boys Chairman and are well prepared,  to the extent they've had a practice round.

Isaac Turner and Oliver Caton are unavailable due to exams and therefore the team is similar to last time. Max Nicholson having finished his National League hockey season is available.

We were a little 'under cooked' at Sheffield commented Greaves, our sharpness around the greens wasn't as it should be. The season has now started and the group are showing they have put some time in.

TEES v HH

 Match v Teesside - Thursday 30th May, 2019
- Dinsdale GC

Teesside 7 - 29 Halifax,Huddersfield
Official Result on YUGC Website

HHDUGC continued their winning streak with a comprehensive victory against Teesside at Dinsdale Golf Club.

On a blustery but lovely day HHDUGC ran out 29 7 victors.

An understrength Teesside team shorn of some of its better players due to it being half term proved to be gutsy early on but eventually the better handicapped players of HHDUGC took over.

Debutant Jack Hampshaw was extremely nervous early on and found the foursomes tricky due to his nerves.

It was a different story in his singles, relaxed on his own ball and playing some super shots to the end of the round winning both matches on the day.

Harry Mowl on his 30th appearance for the juniors (possibly a record) leading the team by example, winning 5 holes in his singles to turn his game around.

HH v HAR

 Match v Harrogate - Sunday 16th June, 2019

Yorkshire Inter-District League: Hopes of title repeat are raised

Halifax-Huddersfield ended Harrogate’s unbeaten start to the season in the Yorkshire Inter-District Junior League with a hard-fought 20-16 success at Fixby yesterday.

The outcome meant Frank Greaves’s reigning champions joined Harrogate at the top of the table with three wins out of four, although yesterday’s visitors have a slightly better points difference.
The home side won four of the six morning foursomes matches and retained their four-point lead when the singles honours were shared.

Greaves had instructed his players to be patient and minimise mistakes and those tactics paid off in the morning.

A key contest was the second one out. Dylan Shaw Radford and Louie Walsh were 2 down with 5 to play before a chip in at 14 from Walsh reduced the deficit.
A birdie at 15, an unlikely half at 16, a great saving putt at 17 and an error by Harrogate at the last resulting in a one hole win for the home club pair.

However, Joel Rushworth and Oliver Bingham lost their match when their opponents birdied the last two holes.
In the singles, Ben Walker won three holes in a row to win his match 2 and 1 and many other games swung to and fro.

Shaw Radford was in unstoppable form, racing to an 8 and 7 victory, finishing it with a four foot birdie putt at the 10th and an effort from 45 feet at the 11th.

Crosland Heath’s Rushworth gained the winning points for Halifax-Huddersfield on his return to the team.

YORK v HH

Match v York - Sunday 21st July, 2019
- Heworth GC

York 16 - 20 Halifax,Huddersfield
Official Result on YUGC Website

York juniors and their managers will be wondering what happened.

A fantastic spirited, inspired and above all skilful afternoons golf brought HHDUGC
from 8 - 0 down to a 20 - 16 victory.

Losing the first 4 foursome matches heavily the last 2 foursomes matches of Max Nicholson and Jack Hampshaw and Oliver Bingham and Joel Rushworth gave the boys a glimmer with their hard fought victories.

8 - 4 down at lunch.

Undoubtedly Harry Mowl would be up for the challenge and duly delivered along with the man playing some fantastic golf presently Dylan Shaw Radford. After the first 4 games 2 apiece and then something must have set them off added Greaves

In the last 8 games only 4 points were conceded to the oppostion and it appears that cool customer Joel Rushworth would ensure that HHDUGC had 19 points to win the match but secured a 1 up victory to reach 20.

Once again belief and a collective target can overcome many challenges, today it was 12 young men who were magnificent.

LEEDS v HH

Match v Leeds - Thursaday 25th July, 2019 - Normanton GC

Leeds 18 - 18 Halifax,Huddersfield
Official Result on YUGC Website

On the hottest day of the year the boys are at it again, can they do what they did on Sunday at York?
The Leeds team shorn of a couple of its lowest handicap players but ahead on combined handicap by 23 shots.
HHDUGC welcome back Isaac Turner for his first match of the season and his last junior one. HHDUGC get 2 buggies for a course that is undulating and strung out. The need for cooling down the
players is a necessity when temperatures hit 34 later in the day, its 25 at 10am. Cooled towels are to the fore and many variations on how these should be worn are visible through the day. Missed opportunities , fiddly holes, poor decisions are made by both sides and early on its the Leeds team that take the lead, at one point when driving along the Par 3 12 th the HHDUGC team were
losing 9 – 3.
Greaves a little worried as some of the margins were hefty. Hopefully they can do what they did on Sunday, making a comeback from what seemed a losing position. The ray of hope was the new pairing of Zak Holroyd and Jack Hampshaw who were up early in their
game and held onto it.
Greaves and the President Elect off to the front, Ben Walker and James Bailey have turned it around now leading, George Hanson and Habib Khan have done the same winning 5 in a row, Isaac and
Louie a similar thing now all square. Ben and James win the last hole and their game, Louie plays a wedge to 2 feet at the last to win the hole and their game, George Hanson a fantastic bunker shot holed by Habib to win their game 1 up.
Somehow the lunch time score was 8 – 4 to the HHDUGC.
Towels cooled water removed from freezer, off we go. As wished for the Ben and Isaac win their games Ben, Ben was down early but finishes with a fantastic birdie with, Isaac always in control of his game, Louie loses the last to halve his game, James Bailey always in a struggle to get more than 1 up but pegged back and eventually losing out by 1 hole. Match score 13 – 9 as Dom Hughes has had a bad day and is dispatched early, Zak Holroyd 4 down after 7 only 2 down after 9 but 4 down again on the 13 th tee, Habib Khan edging back in his game , George Hanson in a similar game but gets to the last 1 up.
Zak digs deep and surprises his opponent; Habib cool as you like wins 1 UP, 15 points, Zak wins the last to cap a remarkable recovery to win, 17 points. George hold on... unfortunately George loses the last and gains a point. The boys have done marvellously well and have 18 points can we squeeze 1 more point from the last 3 games.
Back onto the course, hydration and sustenance required, cool heads if it’s possible. It’s only 27 at 5.51. Joel battling hard but behind, Oliver doing similar, Jack in a right tussle with Tai. Greaves heads
there.
However it’s in vain as none can turn their games around. Leeds win the last 3 games and the match score is 18 all

However not all is lost its pie for tea! The pastry as heavy as the disappointment...
The lads were reminded that they’d only lost 1 match from 13 and they were still Champions, things
appeared to be slightly better.

HH v BFD

.Match v Bradford - Thursday 8th August, 2019
- Crosland Heath GC

Halifax,Huddersfield 21 - 15  Bradford
Official Result on YUGC Website

On a beautiful summers day on a fantastic looking golf course that played as well as it looked according to the players. The would be Champions played host to the team at the bottom of the table.
As always in these matches nothing is a given and the team from Bradford belied their league position. Of course team selection is hampered by holidays, player and parent aspiration and it all comes down to beating your opponent on the day.
At one point in the morning the foursomes had HHDUCG with a lead of 10 points to 2. Some feisty play from the Bradford boys and some errant shots at critical moments from the HHDUGC boys resulted in the lunchtime score being 7 – 5, match on.
Equally matched handicaps in the middle of the singles may have a bearing; the first three from HHDUGC needed to win to set a platform, the last 4 games should by handicap belong to HHDUGC but with 2 debutants who would know.
Harry Mowl 2 down after 9, not firing correctly was informed he couldn’t leave the junior team by losing, Ben Walker and Matthew Holden overcoming their opponents by continuing their recent good form. Harry turned the deficit round and won his game, defeats for Zak Holroyd, George Hanson and the news that Oliver Bingham, Max Nicholson, Harry Micklethwaite were well down required some others to come to the fore.
Habib Khan had found the consistency we know of him after an indifferent start winning 4 and 2 gave the team 15 points.
Dominic Hughes playing conservatively around his former course and finding the putting groove winning 3 and 2, leaving us needing another victory.
James Robertson debutant (9 handicap, 11 years old) smiling with no cares in the world, cool as a cucumber managing a half at the 16th to win his game 3 and 2.
Match won, relax. Go see what else is happening. Jack Hampshaw battling over the last three holes, wins 16th but loses the last 2.
Harry Micklethwaite (debutant), halves 16 by holing a good putt, his opponent and him hit good tee shots to 17 but neither can hole for a 2, down the last Harry in play unfortunately Ben Mear goes out of bounds. Harry wins 1 up.

A good day’s work for a hardworking team who once again collectively showed they are greater than their individual parts.

Thanks to our sponsors especially Simon Walker for the boys team uniform, Brand Consortia, Glenbrae and Stromberg Menswear.
