HALIFAX, HUDDERSFIELD  IN FINE FORM AGAINST EAST RIDING

Halifax Huddersfield & District Union Juniors played hosts to East Riding Union Juniors at Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club .

The visitors teed off on a morning with heavy clouds in the sky into a strongish cold wind .

These are not ideal conditions for good tee shots at Bradley Hall early in the morning. We therefore saw some very poor drives from both teams in the Foursomes from the first tee.

HHDUGC were able to cope better with the wind . They came in to lunch with a lead of 6 points.  HHDUGC 9 against East Riding 3.

Although Ethan Shaw and his partner Lewis Collier were third out they were the first to come in for lunch with a 5 & 4 win

Next in were Connah Judson of Halifax golf club with partner Marcus Peel of Lightcliffe making his first appearance for the Union.  They were 7 up after 9 holes , and went on to win 7 & 6.

Tom Williams and his partner Michael Major, both from Huddersfield Golf Club were first out. Although they managed a half they should have won after being 2 up with two holes to play.

Although Team Captain, Jamie Smith and his partner Brad Hardcastle had tough opponents in Dan Gray and Sam Dillon, they were always in control and went on to win 2 & 1.

Josh Bailles playing on his home course along with Gary Moulman from Huddersfield Golf Club had an easy win 5 & 3.

Playing for HHDGU in the final foursomes match was Josh Morton  and late replacement Danny Lyness of Saddleworth GC making his first appearance for the Union. Both of them played some very good golf but lost to Harry Woodfall and Ryan Gray 4 & 2.  This match was more even than the final score suggests.

After an excellent lunch of Lasagne, Chips and Salad which conformed to the Unions strict diet, the teams went out to play their afternoon Singles matches. 

It had stayed dry during the morning, but when the first few singles matches teed off the black clouds looked menacing and the wind was still quite strong.

Despite the strong wind, in comparison to this morning we were treated to some fine tee shots on the first tee.

The first five singles matches were all very tight with the exception of second man out Ethan Shaw who beat Jonathan Pearce of Bridlington GC 5 & 4

Jamie Smith of Halifax GC ,Tom Williams and Michael Major‘s matches all went to the 18^th.

The par three 18^th. proved to be a tough hole into the wind .  It needing a well struck 3 iron to reach the top deck of the green , where the pin was placed..  All three Halifax, Huddersfield players played the hole really well and went on to win I Up. Jamie Smith had a very good round against low handicapper Dan Gray.

At the same hole Brad Hardcastle , who had been 2 up going down the 14^th needed to win the 18^th to half his match.  Brad was playing against Steve Robins from Hull.  Both players were just off the green with their tee shots, but Brad was in a better position.  He managed to make his par to win the hole and finish All Square.

Marcus Peel playing his first singles match for the Union had a disappointing round losing 4&3 to Joe Coyle from Ganstead GC.

Connah Judson was up against a strong opponent in Arachai Hourang from Hornsea GC.  Connah was always in control winning 3 & 2 after a good game.

Lewis Collier of Crosland Heath was not able to capitalise on his very good morning foursomes win .He lost 4 & 3 to Michael Wray of Hull Golf Club.

Josh Bailles continued to play well in the afternoon winning comfortably 3 & 2.

Gary Moolman had a poor start to his round being two down after two holes. His opponent George Thorpe was in front all the time and finally won convincingly 4 & 3.

New man Danny Lyness had a very good round . He sank some very good putts.  He was playing against the younger of two brothers , playing for East Riding , Ryan Gray.

The last man in was 14year old Josh Morton of Hanging Heaton.  Josh was cruising to a comfortable victory after going dormy  three after 16 holes.  He lost his ball on the par 5 seventeeth.  He was up against a strong opponent in Ryan Lamb of Ganstead Golf Club.  Ryan hid a wonderful shot against the wind to the long seventeeth hole and landed on the green. He took two putts for his par to Josh’s five.  Ryan was still fighting for a half when they stood on the 18^th. tee.  Ryan’s tee shot went straight for the pin but was long into the semi, about 10yds from the pin.  Josh was on the fringe of the green on the lower deck , right hand side. With all his team mates watching and supporters from both camps, unfazed he hit one of the best shots of the day. With a wedge he chipped it to the top tier and it just missed the pin to finish 3ft. past. Ryan hit his shot too firm and finished up on the lower deck of the green. He conceded the match to Josh 2 & 1.

It turned out to de a very convincing win for HHDUGC  26  against 10.  A very well deserved victory.

As the East Riding President, David Hodgson, said at the Evening Meal afterwards.  Most of the courses in the East Riding Union are flat , so there team have no experience of playing on a hilly course.  Something that comes very naturally to the Halifax, Huddersfield team.

Fortunately the weather stayed dry all day, no need for waterproofs. In fact when we left Bradley Hall after being very looked after by the Cater, Jean Metcalf and her staff, the sun was shining.
