Steven Wild - Halifax GC

HHDUGC President 2008

Dear Member,

My selection as President for the 2008 season is a great honour both for myself and for The Halifax Golf Club, where I have been a member since 1989.

I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to the Past Presidents for my nomination, to Allan Woodhead the immediate Past President who I have enjoyed working with in 2007, to John Lawrence our Secretary and all the Executive Committee for all their advice and support during my year as President Elect.   I look forward to their continuing support during 2008.

We step into 2008 without one of the Union’s stalwarts, Brian Taylor.   Brian has relinquished his post as a Vice President and maybe more importantly as the Union’s IT guru.  I am sure that we will see Brian at some of the events this year, if only to make sure the computers are being looked after.   We all thank Brian for his contribution and wish him a long and healthy retirement from the Union.

I am delighted that the Senior and Junior teams will continue to be managed by Chris Mear and Frank Greaves (respectively) in the forthcoming season.   2007 was another “nearly” year for both teams; the juniors finished a creditable 3rd in the table and were the only team to defeat the champions, Harrogate; the seniors started the season losing 19 -17 to strong teams from both Bradford and Leeds, reversing the result of one match in each fixture would have seen us at dizzy heights in the table.   We thank all the people who supported and helped at the matches, the teams greatly appreciate your interest.

As usual Andrew Whitworth reached the final of the Union Matchplay Championship only to be defeated in extra time by Richard Broadley (Huddersfield) to whom we offer our congratulations.  We also extend congratulations to Mark England (Huddersfield) the Union Strokeplay Champion and to Sam Bridges (West End)  the Union Junior Strokeplay Champion and to all the winning players and teams in all our competitions.

2007 saw more than 100 juniors from our member clubs receiving coaching from John Eyre – it is a vital part of the unions work and long may it continue.

I would like to thank all our Sponsors for their continued assistance.  Their support enables the Union to continue to promote amateur golf in our district.    I hope that you will support them whenever possible.

I am delighted that Mr. Philip Walton of Meltham Golf Club has accepted the post of President Elect and look forward to working with him this year.

Finally may I wish you all good golfing in 2008.  I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can at the various events and functions.

Steven Wild

PRESIDENT.
